  • Harris says Trump’s return has sparked fear and silence across U.S. institutions.
  • Obama warns recent actions threaten democracy and would not be tolerated in the past.
  • Emhoff urges legal professionals to defend rights as the rule of law faces growing pressure.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Barack Obama raised concerns over President Donald Trump’s second term, warning of growing threats to democratic values and legal institutions in the U.S. While Harris spoke at the Leading Women Defined Summit, Obama addressed an event at Hamilton College. Both members criticized the recent actions of the Trump administration, warning of increased threats to democratic values and legal institutions in the U.S.

Fear Spreads Across Nation

Harris said Trump’s return to office has triggered a wave of fear across the country. She noted that some institutions remain silent, while others appear to be caving under pressure she described as unconstitutional.

“There were many things we knew would happen,” Harris said. “I’m not here to say I told you so,” she added with a brief laugh. She noted that current events are unfolding just as many predicted before the election.

A recent deal between the White House and the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher also drew attention. The firm, where Harris’s husband Doug Emhoff works, agreed to provide $100 million in pro bono legal services. The administration is working closely with law firms while targeting those linked to political opponents.

Emhoff Defends Rule of Law

Emhoff responded to the situation earlier in the week, warning that democracy and the rule of law are under attack and urging legal professionals to act and defend constitutional rights. On the other hand, Obama voiced his concerns and stated that the recent government actions would never have been tolerated under past administrations and criticised the use of pressure tactics against universities and law firms.

Further, he criticized the White House for pressuring universities and law firms and condemned what he called punitive actions against firms based on whom they represent. Obama had previously campaigned for Harris during the 2024 election. At the time, he warned that Trump’s second term could bring serious risks. Now, he believes those warnings are becoming reality. Both leaders called for renewed vigilance, warning that core American values are being tested in unprecedented ways.
