Elon Musk Takes Dig at Crypto Scammers Posing as “Hot Girls”
Elon Musk recently took a playful jab at crypto scammers on X (formerly Twitter), and it’s both funny and spot on. He posted an image of Poseidon, the Greek god, with the caption: “There’s an old saying—if a hot girl texts you about crypto, block him.”
It’s a lighthearted take on the all-too-common scam where fraudsters pretend to be attractive women to trick people into crypto schemes. Musk’s message is clear: if you get a message from a “hot girl” about crypto, it’s probably time to hit the block button. And honestly, the idea of Poseidon getting involved in crypto scams makes it even funnier.
But beneath the humor, there’s a very real warning about crypto scams. Scammers have been using romantic connections to manipulate people into trusting them and investing in fake opportunities for ages. It’s an age-old trick that’s still catching people off guard. While Musk’s tweet might’ve been a joke, the reality behind it is anything but.
Ruja Ignatova, known as the “Crypto Queen,” ran the OneCoin scam, which promised huge returns but ended up stealing billions. While it wasn’t a romance scam, she still used the same trick—building trust through personal connections—that scammers use today.
Just a few days ago, the BBC reported the story of Rodrick Lodge, a 69-year-old man who was scammed out of £85,000 by a woman named “Anita.” He believed they were in a romantic relationship, and after planning to move to Kenya and marry her, she disappeared. He lost his entire life savings, and despite getting warnings from his bank, Lodge felt completely let down in the end.
So, while Musk’s post was meant to be a joke, it comes with a real message—when it comes to crypto scams, staying alert and trusting your gut can save you a lot of trouble.
