The Governor of California seeks to obtain tariff exemptions for California in Trump's trade war
According to Axios, California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Friday that he is negotiating with other countries to ensure that California can be exempted from retaliatory tariffs in Trump's escalating trade war. Newsom, seen as a potential candidate for the US presidency in 2028, is seeking to shield California from its negative impact. "Donald Trump's tariffs do not represent all Americans. I have instructed the Californian government to look for new opportunities to expand trade and remind our global trading partners - California remains a stable partner," Newsom said in a video released on Friday. He called California the "pillar of the American economy" and emphasized that it is committed to maintaining "stable trade relations" globally. On platform X (formerly Twitter), Newsom wrote that California "is ready for dialogue with global trading partners". He also stated that California is not afraid of using its market influence, "to counteract the largest scale tax increase we face this generation."
